Jupiter Ascending

Plot summary:

Jupiter Jones was born to her mother, Aleksa, after her father, Maximilian had been shot and killed at their house, during a robbery. Jupiter, her mother, and her mother’s sister, all illegally immigrated to the United States when she was still an infant, and now, she cleans houses for a living. Wanting to acquire extra money so she couldbuy a telescope – the same model that her father had before it was stolen in the home robbery – Jupiter goes to sell her eggs, but is attacked by aliens known as The Keepers that had shape-shifted into humans. However, she is saved by another alien known as Caine Wise, who later explains to her that he had been hired by one of the three heirs to an intergalactic family of nobility – The Abrasax Family. Caine also explains that he is a human-wolf hybrid: A Lycantant. And as their journey of being on the run from The Keepers and other bounty hunters continues, Jones and Wise encounter the three heirs, and learns of her destiny and inheritance, subsequently uncovering their treacherous schemes.

Review:

Coming to the story itself, although interesting, I feel like its missing something. We see Jupiter Jones, played by Mila Kunis, being lied to or manipulated by the heirs of the Abrasax family – First lied to by Kalique(Tuppence Middleton), then manipulted by Titus(Douglas Booth), and then again manipulated by Balem(Eddie Redmayne). I just find it a little repetitive that Jupiter ends up being the damsel-in-distress again and again, to be rescued by Caine(Channing Tatum), again and again. This factor tends to be masked, though, considering the astonishing visual effects, combined with the spectacular music that is delivered in the action scenes, be it chase sequences, shootouts, or physical combat. The dialogues were good – interesting.

Considering the acting, I think Mila Kunis and Channing Tatum did well in their respective roles. You have Jupiter Jones, who’s struggling to comprehend the new world she’s dragged into, and Caine Wise, the former Legionaire whose new objective is to protect Jupiter, who he has grown fond of, but is in denial of his feelings. Middleton, Booth, and Redmayne did pretty well, too, in my opinion. And Redmayne’s speech gave a similarity to that of Voldermort, but with a nose. And Sean Bean didn’t die this time – Yay! And to wrap this up, I’d say that even though it may have some shortcomings, you may still find this movie interesting.

Independence Day: Resurgence - Review

Independence Day: Resurgence

Plot summary:

Twenty years has passed since humanity faced its greatest threat and fought its greatest battle for freedom against the extra-terrestrial beings that sought to destroy our planet. And with time, their technology had been used for our advantage, heightening our offensive and defensive technologies. During his trip to visit a remaining alien ship in Africa, Dr. David Levinson is informed that an alien spaceship is spotted near the moon. Despite Dr. Levinson’s protest towards firing at this new mysterious spaceship that is dissimilar to that of their previous assailants, offensive measures are proceeded. And while acquiring a particular section of its remains, the Earth is approached by a three thousand-mile spacecraft. Their familiar foe has returned. It is now up to the military and a team of scientists to prepare the counter-measures and defeat this formidable foe before them, as they did two decades ago.

Review:

Personally, I found this sequel as entertaining as its previous installment. We see some familiar characters as well as newly-introduced characters – all who are portrayed well. It was good to see actors such as Jeff Goldblum(Dr. David Levinson), Bill Pullman(former president Thomas J. Whitmore), Brent Spiner(Dr. Brakish Okun), and Judd Hirsch(Julius Levinson) reappear in this franchise. And some of them brought some good hilarity into play in some of the scenes. Too bad they had killed off Will Smith’s character – Captain Steven Hiller – out of this sequel, though. The new actors and actresses did a great job too, in my opinion.

We see much more CGI this time, and it was all spectacular – from the interstellar clouds to the fiery carnage down on Earth. Although it’s not surprising, considering the fact that some of Roland Emmerich’s movies involve a lot of CGI. The dialogues were great and interesting. They were serious when needed be, and brought out some humour whenever it could. The music was really good too. I enjoyed it. Overall, I think this is a pretty good movie.
