San Andreas - Review

San Andreas

Plot summary:
Learning of a seismic swarm is Falco, Nevada, Dr. Lawrence Hayes and Dr. Kim Chung, both go to investigate it. And as they’re there, the swarm escalates to a 7.1-magnitude earthquake. The situation begins to escalate, with more seismic activity increasing along the San Andreas fault-line, leading to the conclusion that the Nevada incident was a precursor movement along the leading edge of the plate boundary-fault from Los Angeles to San Francisco. And as the situation escalates even more, leading to a 9.1-magnitude quake, Los Angeles Fire Department search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, Ray Gaines heads off to rescue his wife, Emma, whom he’s separated from, and his daughter, Blake – all this while Emma is in Los Angeles, meeting her new boyfriend’s sister, and Blake is in San Francisco, where she meets a guy, Ben Taylor, and his younger brother, Ollie.

Review:
It’s out of the frying pan and into another frying pan with this movie. It just sends the main characters of this movie from one perilous situation to another, elevating the danger through the progressing scenes. The utter destruction depicted in this movie is remarkable – spectacular visual effects indeed. And this movie definitely hits the mark for thrill, not just with the cataclysmic events, but with how they play out and how the main characters face and get through them. And the music really assisted in it as well. The dialogues were good – they met the dire situations well, and also worked pretty well in hitting you in the feels when Ray Gaines(Dwayne Johnson), and his wife, Emma(Carla Gugino) discuss about the past traumatic event which lead to their separation. And not forgetting all the seismology explanations, which I personally found to be interesting.

Coming to the acting, Dwayne Johnson played his role well in his portrayal of the father who is still adjusting to a separation, and is also still recovering from the previously-mentioned traumatic incident. Not only him, but so did Carla Gugino. And the chemistry between the two seems to play out well as the movie progresses. Alexandra Daddario(Blake Gaines) and Hugo Johnstone-Burt(Ben Taylor) also were pretty good, and so was Art Parkinson, who played Ben’s brother, Ollie. And Art was pretty good in bringing in some comic relief during all that unfolding chaos. Another noteworthy acting was Paul Giamatti’s role as Dr. Lawrence Haynes, the seismologist who predicts the earthquake. This was a pretty entertaining movie to watch.
