The Revenant - Review

The Revenant

Plot summary:
During their expedition in exploring the uncharted wilderness of America, in the year 1823, a group of explorers are attacked by a group of members of the Arikara Tribe(known as The Ree in the movie). Some of them escape, and make their way to Fort Kiowa. During their journey, one of its members, Hugh Glass is attacked and mauled by a Grizzly Bear. Glass survives his attack, but he is unable to move due to his wounds. After some time, he is abandoned by his group and left for dead. After recovering enough energy, Glass resumes his journey to the fort, making his way through the vast wilderness ahead of him.

Review:
This movie strongly introduces a theme of survival, dragging the character Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, into the tortuous wilderness and having his limits tested every single day with varying obstacles and challenges, which are all life-threatening. It really highlights all the struggles one would have to face in such a situation, in great detail. And not only must he endure the harsh weather and find whatever food he can, but he must also run from The Arikara, who take no prisoners.

Leonardo DiCaprio delivers his acting quite brilliantly. And we are exposed to his character’s story of survival, as the cinematography reveals us to the woods that outstretch far beyond, the tress and mountains that tower high above, the blizzards that rage on. One notable scene is when Glass is dragged downstream by the rapids, giving us shots not only from a viewpoint beside him, but from Glass’ viewpoint as well, submersing us into his situation. No pun intended. And the scenery, it was really beautiful. It really brought out the setting needed. Great work by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki. And the scene with the bear – that seemed so real. Wonderful CGI in bringing the bear to life and really good sound effects as well, in making the skin-tearing and bone-breaking experience . The violence in this movie is well-detailed, be it an animal attack or human. And the music – I really liked the music too. It helped in amplifying the effect of the settings and situations even more. This is definitely a movie worth watching.
