Captain America: The First Avenger - Review

Captain America: The First Avenger

Plot summary:
It’s 1941, and the world is at its second great war. A young man – Steven Rogers – is about to enlist to the army, but is found not acceptable due to his frail physique and many ailments. Steve is later met by Dr. Abraham Erskine, a German scientist who had defected to the States and now works for the Strategic Scientific Reserve(SSR). He approves Steve’s enlistment, and soon, Steve undergoes a training programme with other cadets to be selected for a super-soldier experiment. Despite Colonel Chester Phillips’ disapproval, Dr. Erskine selects Steve as the subject for his experiment, and collaborating with Howard Stark, carries it out. Steve is injected with the Super-Soldier Serum and exposed to Vita rays, after which his physique is enhanced. With time, Steve came to be known by the moniker Captain America. After learning about HYDRA – the Nazi scientific research division – Steve forms a group consisting of prisoners of war, along with his friend, James Barnes, and takes the fight to HYDRA, destroying all their bases and uncovering the malicious plans of one of its heads – Johann Schmidt AKA The Red Skull – after Schmidt had recently discovered a great energy source.

Review:
From the start of the movie, there was much focus on Steve Rogers’ character and principles. His respect for his country, and for those who went to war to serve their country, his dislike towards bullies, and his unrelenting will. And it is shown in the movie that Steve remains true to his ideals even after he is bestowed with such great power, and how he grows as a person even after the experiment. No pun intended. Chris Evans did a great job portraying Captain America. Tommy Lee Jones’ role as the grumpy old Colonel Chester Phillips brought it some humour to this movie, as well did Hayley Atwell’s role as Agent Peggy Carter on a few occasions. Hugo Weaving’s portrayal of Johann Schmidt was brilliant. Facial expressions and speech was spot-on. I have seen him act in The Matrix and The Lord Of The Rings trilogies, and his acting was brilliant in even them. His character was Smith in The Matrix, and now Schmidt in this. Coincidence? Alright, back to the topic at hand. The growing romance depicted between Steve and Peggy was quite sweet, as well as amusing to watch. I have no complaints about the technical elements: the cinematography, the lighting, the music. They were all well-done. Especially the action sequences – They were well-made and edited. And the special effects were marvelous. Again, no pun intended. The costumes were pretty good. I personally think the second Captain America costume, which Stark gave Steve, looks better than costume he wore to promote war bonds from state-to-state. All in all, it was a fantastic movie, and a great experience. I enjoyed it, and I hope you do too.
