Sherlock - Review

Sherlock

Plot summary:
In the city of London, Sherlock Holmes acts as a consulting detective to the police, aiding them in cases they cannot solve alone. And through an acquaintance of his known as Mike Stamford, he is introduced to Dr. John Watson, who’s a former army doctor now back in London after suffering trauma which left him with a psychosomatic limp. Soon, John is dragged into Sherlock’s world of intricate investigations on mysterious and at times baffling cases that take them across London. And during their journeys, they encounter a formidable and equally ingenious nemesis named Moriarty who seems to have a grand scheme of his own planned.

Review:
Considering characters, we first have Sherlock Holmes: the rather peculiar high-functioning sociopathic detective who takes his work very seriously – basically his work as a detective is his life. The kind of person who finds ordinary lifestyles dull and gets ecstatic about investigating murders and jumps at any opportunity to do so. Not to mention he’s the type of person who at times can be arrogant and condescending. And on the other hand, we have John Watson, who has seen enough death and faced his fair share of hazards during his tours in Afghanistan, and who still yearns for some action; some danger; in his present boring life. Two very different personalities united in a common goal to solve crime, one fueled by his eagerness for mysteries and in showing how smart he is, and the other, who just can’t help himself when perilous situations are involved. And of course then there’s Sherlock’s brother; Mycroft Holmes; who’s equally talented but far less troublesome.

Benedict Cumberbatch(Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman(John Watson) make a terrific pair in this series. Cumberbatch really taps into the role of Holmes, bringing out his ingenuity, his quirks, and even his intolerable habbits and actions, and Freeman definitely does a brilliant job in portraying Watson in his quest in accompanying Holmes whilst dealing with all the madness Holmes throws his way. Of course, I should definitely mention Andrew Scott who stars as Jim Moriarty. He’s definitely spot-on in his portrayal of the manipulative and deceitful criminal mastermind. Mark Gatiss(Mycroft Holmes), Una Stubbs(Mrs. Hudson), Louise Brealey(Molly Hooper), and Rupert Graves(Inspector Lestrade) also contribute some brilliant acting for their respective roles.

The plot is fantastic, with many mysteries to be solved popping up while the battle between the consultant detective and consultant criminal wages on – each investigation interesting in its own way with equally interesting dialogues to back them up. Not to mention they all come with some comedic scenes which makes this series even more fun to watch. And the methodology as to how the deductions are made is also well-presented and entertaining to watch. The settings and the lighting are utilized well in the varying scenes and the music is really entertaining as well. This is one series you definitely have to watch.
